Will Riverdale See an Adaptation of Afterlife with Archie?

Although fans of The Chilling Tales of Sabrina were dismayed to hear about the show’s cancellation in 2020, fans will be eager to see Kiernan Shipka play everyone’s favorite teenage witch in the upcoming Riverdale episode “The Witches of Riverdale.”

When the news broke out, fans online couldn’t hold back their excitement, pouring their glee on various social media platforms.

Sabrina will be returning to the small screen on the 19th episode of Riverdale’s sixth season.

Although her appearance is a cause for excitement, Sabrina’s reason for visiting Riverdale is a grim one.

“When several of their own fall prey to Percival’s (guest star Chris O’Shea) latest plan, Cheryl (Madelaine Petsch) calls upon fellow witch Sabrina Spellman (guest star Kiernan Shipka) for help,” writes the official episode synopsis. “Elsewhere, Percival gives Reggie (Charles Melton) an ultimatum.”

The trailer revealed that Sabrina Spellman would be visiting Riverdale to help bring Archie and Jughead back from the dead.

This wouldn’t be the first Archie story to involve witchcraft and necromancy. Nearly a decade ago, Archie Comics published a series revolving around a zombie apocalypse in the town of Riverdale called Afterlife with Archie.

Afterlife with Archie features the entire gang as they battle through the zombie-infested town.

The apocalypse began when Jughead sought the help of Sabrina to bring Hot Dog back to life after he had been run over by Reggie Mantle in a fit of jealousy and rage.

Despite necromancy being banned, Sabrina does what she can – only to bring back an undead Hot Dog who bites Jughead, setting off the zombie apocalypse.

Sabrina is doing no better as Aunts Hilda and Zelda punish her by marrying her off to Cthulhu.

The plot is an original story that strays from the mainstream Archie comics. It kickstarted the Archie Horror lineup along with Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (which inspired the Netflix Show), Jughead: The Hunger, Vampironica, and Blossoms 666.

Afterlife with Archie is written by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and illustrated by Francesco Francavilla.

It remains to be seen how much of the Archie Horror comic the episode will borrow from, but fans of the comics will be eager to see if The Witches of Riverdale will loosely adapt the story.
