Her Loss by Drake and 21 Savage [OVO Sound/Republic]
The song “Jimmy Cooks,” a collaboration between Drake and 21 Savage off the Toronto native’s most recent solo album, Honestly, Nevermind, was released as a music video last month. The two made an album announcement in the video. Following singles like “Knife Talk” and “Mr. Right Now,” Her Loss marks Drake and 21 Savage’s first full-length joint effort. Lil Yachty, Young Nudy, Boi-1da, Travis Scott, Tay Keith, Noah “40” Shebib, and others all contributed to the album. On “Circo Loco,” a song where Drake references to Tory Lanez allegedly shooting Megan Thee Stallion, Daft Punk’s “One More Time” is also sampled. (Megan responded angrily to the alleged insult.)

Endure [Rough Trade] is a particular interest.

Alpha Zulu [Loyauté/Glassnote] in Phoenix
The band’s name, Alpha Zulu, is derived from an enigmatic phrase spoken by a pilot that Phoenix frontman Thomas Mars reportedly overheard during a tumultuous flight. Following 2017’s Ti Amo, it is the band’s eighth studio album. It features the track “Tonight,” a collaboration between Ezra Koenig of Vampire Weekend and the band. Koenig had little involvement with the song’s lyrics since she was pleased to “simply be the vocalist for once,” according to Mars. Koenig told Pitchfork, “I don’t believe Thomas gets enough respect as a songwriter, especially considering English is his second language. He chooses interesting phrases, and it has such a fun quality.

Back Home [Kill Rock Stars] by Big Joanie
Big Joanie was founded by Steph Phillips and Chardine Taylor-Stone as a result of their shared interest in the Raincoats. The band’s debut album, Sistahs, proudly displayed its feminist punk and indie rock inspirations. The sense of dislocation that members of diasporic cultures frequently experience served as the inspiration for the trio’s sophomore album, Back Home. The band explained, “It’s about the varied definitions of home.” “It’s neither here nor there, whether it’s here in the UK, back in Africa or the Caribbean, or some somewhere that doesn’t actually exist.”

Backxwash: Even if We Suffer, His Happiness Must Come First [Ugly Hag]
The third and final album in the trilogy by Backxwash, which also contains the albums God Has Nothing To Do With This Leave Him Out of It from 2020 and I Lie Here Buried With My Rings and My Dresses from 2021, is titled His Happiness Shall Come First Even Though We Are Suffering. Vaelastrasz, Morgan-Paige, Michael Go, Pupil Slicer, Censored Dialogue, Sadistik, and Ghais Guevara all make cameos on the latest album from the Montreal rapper.

Sexy [self-released] Coco & Clair Clair
Claire Toothill and Taylor Nave, both of suburban Atlanta, first connected on Twitter in 2012. Posh, their debut Coco & Clair Clair collaboration, was released in 2017. The tune “Cherub” from the duo’s debut album, Sexy, is featured.

Turnover: Running for cover since I’m in the way
After nearly a decade of nonstop touring, Virginia Beach’s Turnover were forced to stop when the COVID-19 epidemic struck. After so much time on the road, their fifth studio album, Myself in the Way, finds frontman Austin Getz turning inward and considering spirituality.
