Interview with Filmmaker Sebastian Sommer on his Feature Film ‘Dragon’

Sebastian Sommer is a filmmaker making waves in the film scene with his debut feature, Dragon. The film, which premiered on VOD and streaming, offers a unique blend of medieval fantasy and artificial intelligence. With previous short films showcased at the Guggenheim Museum and the Tribeca Film Festival, Sommer’s transition to feature filmmaking has been highly anticipated. In this exclusive interview, Sommer delves into the creative process behind Dragon.

Q. Can you share the inspiration behind this project?

Sebastian Sommer: Dragon was born out of an interest with mixing technology and storytelling. I wanted to see how artificial intelligence could be utilized to craft a narrative that feels both timeless and futuristic. The medieval setting provided a great backdrop for this.

Q. Which filmmakers or films have had the biggest impact on your style and storytelling?

Sebastian Sommer: I’ve always been drawn to filmmakers who bend reality, directors like David Lynch, John Carpenter, and Andrei Tarkovsky. I love action films as well. I want to make the next Hardcore Henry some day.

Q. The film employs AI as a significant storytelling tool. Did you face any challenges integrating AI into the filmmaking process?

Sebastian Sommer: Using AI was both exciting and unique to this film. The primary goal was ensuring that the AI-generated elements seamlessly blended with traditional filmmaking techniques. It required a deep understanding of both the technology and the artistic vision to maintain the film’s emotional resonance.

Q. What are you working on next?

Sebastian Sommer: I plan on making another movie in the future. I don’t know if I will use AI, but there is a freedom in knowing that it is there.

Sebastian Sommer’s Dragon stands as a testament to the evolving landscape of filmmaking. As AI continues to influence various industries, Sommer’s new film offers a glimpse into the future of cinema, one where innovation and imagination go hand in hand.
