Since it was revealed that Ncuti Gatwa of Sex Education will be portraying the part of the fifteenth Doctor in Doctor Who, we have been impatiently awaiting to see how Gatwa would interpret the famous figure.
The BBC has now given us a first peek at the character and his new friend Ruby Sunday (played by Millie Gibson).
The BBC photographs show the two standing next to a trailer, while another shot shows Gatwa facing the setting sun while sporting a bright orange sweater, a pair of brown checkered pants, and a jacket to match.
We won’t see Gatwa in action for a while, of course. David Tennant will reprise his role as the Time Lord in the 60th anniversary episodes that will premiere in November before taking over as the Doctor.
Before Gatwa and Gibson’s series begins, none other than Catherine Tate, who is repeating her role as the Doctor’s companion Donna Noble, will be joining him. However, other information concerning his debut series is being kept under wraps. The first episode with Gatwa is scheduled to run around the holiday season in 2023.
The actor is “truly honoured, beyond excited and of course a little bit afraid” to be playing the legendary part, which is the only thing we do know about Gatwa’s series (besides from these new photographs).
When his selection was initially made public, the actor said: “Each of my very gifted predecessors has handled that special responsibility and privilege with the utmost care. This role and show mean so much to so many people around the world, including myself. I’ll do everything in my power to follow suit.
“Working with Russell T Davies is a dream come true; he is almost as iconic as the Doctor himself. He writes in an engaging, clever, and very dangerous manner. a figurative stage for actors.
Gatwa certainly looks the part, and while we’ll likely have to wait a little while longer for a trailer for his series, we’re convinced that his portrayal of the Doctor will be just as famous as he is.
